Ovary. Light micrograph of a transverse section through a healthy ovary, showing the development of eggs (ova). Around the ovary is a connective tissue layer, the tunica albuginea (purple). The body of the ovary consists of the stroma (pink). In the peripheral stroma or cortex, many immature follicles (small white structures) contain developing eggs. Secondary and graafian follicles have large fluid-filled spaces and maturing eggs. The central stroma or medulla has blood vessels (red) and few follicles. Once mature, an egg will burst out of a graafian follicle of the ovary, and will move into a fallopian tube to be fertilized. Stained with Azan. Magnification: x3 at 35mm size.
