Color enhanced scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of Epidermphyton floccosum, one type of fungus that causes groin ringworm or "jock itch," and athlete's foot. Jock itch (tinea cruris) and Athlete's foot (tinea pedis) were once thought to be caused by worms (tinea) rather than fungi. E. floccosum infections may become epidemic among personnel using common shower or gym facilities. Fungal infections are very difficult to treat because both animals and fungi are eukaryotes, sharing many of the same chemical and cell structural characteristics. The E. floccosum shown here have club-shaped macroconidia (spores). SEM 900x at 70mm.z
