Light micrograph of a liver with chronic persistent hepatitis. Hepatitis, or liver inflammation, is characterized by damaged liver cells. Here, the portal tract (white, upper right) has become enlarged and infiltrated with chronic inflammatory cells (dark nuclei). Some liver cells (lower center) have become swollen. Chronic hepatitis occurs when recovery from acute viral hepatitis is incomplete. While chronic persistent hepatitis is a long-term condition, it is rarely severe.
