Susskind of Trimberg is the author of six poems in the Codex Manesse. The poems date to the second half of the 14th century, and if their purported author is historical, he would be the first documented Jewish poet of the German language. There are no records about Susskind's life and not even proof that the poems recorded under his name are from a single author. The frontispiece preceding his works in the Codex Manesse identifies him as a Jew by means of the pointed Judenhut (headgear which Jews were required to wear by law in the later German Middle Ages) and a long curled beard, also frequently associated with Jews. As the only Jewish poet of the Codex Manesse, Susskind was the subject of particular attention in scholarship since the 18th century. The Codex Manesse is a book of songs/poetry, the single most comprehensive source of Middle High German Minnesang poetry, written and illustrated between 1304 when the main part was completed, and 1340 with the addenda.
