Entitled: "Landing of American troops at Daiquiri, Cuba." Spanish General Arsenio Linares y Pombo ordered the area from Daiquir穩 to Siboney fortified in anticipation of USA disembarkments there. On June 20, 1898, US Navy Admiral William T. Sampson, US Army General William Rufus Shafter and Cuban General Calixto Garc穩a planned an invasion whereby the navy would shell Daiquir穩, Garc穩a's Cuban troops would attack the Spaniards, and, in the meantime, U.S. ships would transport some Cuban troops to Caba簽as to cut off communications and supply. The Spanish-American War was a conflict in 1898 between Spain and the USA, the result of US intervention in the Cuban War of Independence. The ten week war was fought in both the Caribbean and the Pacific. US naval power proved decisive, allowing expeditionary forces to disembark in Cuba against a Spanish garrison already brought to its knees by nationwide Cuban insurgent attacks and further wasted by yellow fever. The result was the 1898 Treaty of Paris, negotiated on terms favorable to the US, which allowed it temporary control of Cuba, and ceded ownership of Puerto Rico, Guam and the Philippine islands.
