In April 1191 Richard left Messina for Acre, but a storm dispersed his large fleet. It was discovered that the ship carrying his sister Joan and his new fianc矇e Berengaria was anchored on the south coast of Cyprus, along with the wrecks of several other vessels, including the treasure ship. Survivors of the wrecks had been taken prisoner by the island's ruler, Isaac Komnenos. He ordered Isaac to release the prisoners and treasure. Isaac refused, so Richard landed his troops. The local magnates abandoned Isaac, who tried to escape. Richard's troops conquered the whole island. Richard I (September 8, 1157 - April 6, 1199) was King of England. Richard was a central Christian commander during the Third Crusade, leading the campaign after the departure of Philip II of France and scoring considerable victories against his Muslim counterpart, Saladin, although he did not retake Jerusalem from Saladin. At the age of 42, Richard died of an infection caused by an arrow wound, during a siege of a small French castle. He remains one of the few kings of England remembered by his epithet, rather than regnal number, and is an enduring iconic figure.
