Jeanne-Marie Lanvin (January 1, 1867 - July 6, 1946) was a French fashion designer. She founded the Lanvin fashion house and the perfume company Lanvin Parfums. In 1909, Lanvin joined the Syndicat de la Couture, which marked her formal status as a couturi癡re. The clothing she made for her daughter began to attract the attention of a number of wealthy people who requested copies for their own children. Soon, she was making dresses for their mothers, and some of the most famous names in Europe were included in the clientele of her new boutique on the rue du Faubourg Saint-Honor矇, Paris. Fashion is a distinctive and often habitual trend in the style in which a person dresses. It is the prevailing styles in behavior and the newest creations of textile designers. Prior to the mid-19th century, most clothing was custom-made. It was handmade for individuals, either as home production or on order from dressmakers and tailors. By the beginning of the 20th century, with the rise of new technologies such as the sewing machine, the development of the factory system of production, and the emergence of department stores, clothing had increasingly come to be mass-produced in standard sizes and sold at fixed prices.
