Entitled: "F.M. Gay's annual barbecue given on his plantation every year" shows crowds of African-American and white people separated by a long counter covered with slices of bread at a barbecue in Alabama. Segregation is separation of humans into racial groups in daily life. It may apply to activities such as eating in a restaurant, drinking from a water fountain, using a public toilet, attending school, going to the movies, riding on a bus, or in the rental or purchase of a home. Racism consists of both prejudice and discrimination based in social perceptions of biological differences between peoples. It often takes the form of social actions, practices or beliefs, or political systems that consider different races to be ranked as inherently superior or inferior to each other, based on presumed shared inheritable traits, abilities, or qualities. Photographed as part of the "America eats" project for the Federal Writers' Project, circa 1930-41.
