A sculpture of Gula, ancient Mesopotamian deity of healing. Gula is also known as Ninkarrak, Ninisinna, "Lady of Isin," and Nintinugga. Gula's earliest appearance dates to the Third Dynasty of Ur, also known as the Neo-Sumerian Empire or the Ur III Empire (21st to 20th century BC ). She rose in popularity in the second half of the second millennium during the Kassite period, and her cult continued well into the first millennium. Representations of Gula as a seated figure with a dog (her attribute animal) reclining at her feet emerge in the Old Babylonian period.
