Etching entitled: June (Giugno), Sheep Shearing by Antonio Tempesta from his series: The Twelve Months (plate 6), 1599. June is the sixth month of the year in the Julian and Gregorian calendars and one of the four months with a length of 30 days. June is the month with the longest daylight hours of the year in the Northern Hemisphere and the shortest daylight hours of the year in the Southern Hemisphere. The Latin name for June is Junius. Ovid wrote that the month is named after the Roman goddess Juno, the goddess of marriage and the wife of the supreme deity Jupiter. In ancient Rome, the period from mid-May through mid-June was considered inauspicious for marriage.
