The ship Belgica trapped in the Bellinghausen Sea ice pack near Antarctica, 1898. Belgica belonged to the Belgian Antarctic Expedition (BelgAE) of 1897 to 1899, led by Adrien de Gerlache. It was the first expedition to winter in the Antarctic region. Failing to find a way through into the Weddell Sea, on 28 February 1898, de Gerlache's expedition became trapped in the ice near Peter I Island. Frederick Cook and the First Mate, Roald Amundsen, took command of the expedition when de Gerlache was unable to fulfill his duty as leader due to scurvy.
