S. A. Andree and Knut Fraenkel with their crashed balloon on pack ice, photographed by the third expedition member, Nils Strindberg. The exposed film for this photograph and others from the failed 1897 expedition were recovered in 1930. Swedish balloonist S. A. Andree attempted to reach the North Pole by air but the journey ended in tragedy when the hydrogen balloon failed and was grounded after a couple of days into the expedition. S. A. Andree (1854-97) and his companions, Nils Strindberg (1872-97) and Knut Fraenkel (1870-97), survived for three months before all three perished in the harsh Arctic terrain. The chance discovery in 1930 of the expedition's last camp yielded many documents from their disastrous journey.
