Andree attempted to reach the North Pole by air but the journey ended in tragedy when the hydrogen balloon failed and was grounded after a couple of days into the expedition. S. A. Andree (1854-97) and his companions, Nils Strindberg (1872-97) and Knut Fraenkel (1870-97), survived for three months before all three perished in the harsh Arctic terrain. The chance discovery in 1930 of the expedition's last camp yielded many documents from their disastrous journey.
