Albert Crewe (February 18, 1927 - November 18, 2009) Director of Argonne National Laboratory from 1961-1967, Crewe led the effort to construct an Argonne particle accelerator and later invented the scanning electron microscope. This portrait, from November 1, 1961, shows Crewe, who was director of the Particle Accelerator Division, becoming the third Argonne Director. As the new director of the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission's leading nuclear reactor laboratory, he was still a citizen of the United Kingdom. He soon became a U.S. citizen, in his words, "in record time."
