Colossus of Rhodes, statue of the Greek sun god Helios, and one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. The statue was completed in 282 BC, and was destroyed 56 years later in an earthquake. The exact site of the Colossus is lost to memory. However, from ancient writers, we know that it stood somewhere at the entrance to the harbor at Rhodes (a Greek island in the Aegean Sea), it was approximately 100 feet high, it was made of bronze sections strengthened with masonry within, and that the popular idea of it, standing with legs astride, is false.
