Medieval doctors observed and interviewed their patients, and perhaps felt the pulse, but uroscopy, the examination of their urine, was most important. There were up to 30 features to note, including color, sediment, smell, and taste. These provided the basis for diagnosis, and guided treatment. In many places the urine flask became the symbol of the doctor. Uroscopy continued into the 19th century.
