An Islamic cosmographical diagram from 1080 AD. The universal intellect worships God in the Muslim formula 'la ilahah illa'llah', that is, 'there is no God but Allah'. This formula has 4 words, 7 syllables and in Arabic 12 letters. The Ismaili philospher Nasir Khusraw considered that these corresponded to the structure of the cosmos: 4 elements, 7 planets, and 12 zodiac signs. The intervening levels are modes of worship: purification, submission and glorification. This type of esoteric cosmographical diagram was highly valued in Islamic mystical philosophy.
