The Cycladic Island of Delos, Greece is the birthplace of Apollon and Artemis. Despite its minute size, as a Panhellenic shrine it played an important role in antiquity, both commercial and religious when the sanctuary to Apollon attracted pilgrims and riches. Excavations (since 1872 by French archaeologists) of ruins covered the period from the 7th century BC to the end of the first millennium BC. It is a now World Heritage site.
