Endowed with rich terra rosa soils and watered by rain, a perennial river and numerous springs, Jerash was settled from the Bronze Age on. Rebuilt as a Hellenistic city in the early 2nd century BC, it flourished for many centuries. The city acquired its gridded streets and most of its structures from the 1st to the 3rd century AD.
