Captioned: "When the woman wants to grind any corn, she kneels down, and, taking i both hands the convex stone, she rubs it up and down in the hollow of the lower stone with a motion similar to that of a baker pressing down his dough and rolling it in front of him." Quern-stones are stone tools for hand-grinding a wide variety of materials. They are used in pairs. The lower, stationary, stone is called a quern, while the upper mobile stone is called a handstone. They were first used in the Neolithic to grind cereals into flour. Caption excerpted from "Primitive Man" by Louis Figuier, 1871.
