Mr. Sivan, a watchmaker of Geneva, succeeded in giving temporary power of speech to an ordinary pocket watch. It contained a phonograph disc made of vulcanized rubber having 48 grooves which corresponded to 12 hours and 36 quarters. When the button was pushed the rubber disc started rotating and a stylus, followed the mounds and dales and vibrated. It then transferred the vibrations to a membrane that converted them into sounds, reproducing a human voice. The device could be fitted to any clock.
