Woodcut of a "monstrous animal which lives only on air, called Haiit" from Des Monstres et prodiges by Ambroise Par矇, 1573. Des Monstres is filled with unsubstantiated accounts of sea devils, marine sows, and monstrous animals with human faces. With its extensive discussion of reproduction and illustrations of birth defects, the book invited accusations of pornography. "It can be in size as big as a large Guenon, having its belly hanging down and close to the ground, even though it is standing; its face and hands are almost those of a child. This Haiit being caught, it heaves great sighs, more or less as man afflicted by some great and excessive pain would do. It is a gray color, having only three claws to each paw, four fingers long, made in the shape of the bones of a carp, with which claws which are as trenchant as those of a Lion, or some other cruel beast, it climbs up into trees, where it makes its dwelling more than on the ground. The savages say they live on the wind." It has been suggested it might have been a sloth that was being described.
