The Shakers, also known as the United Society of Believers in Christ's Second Appearing, were an offshoot of the Religious Society of Friends (or Quakers) and believed in strict celibacy and simplicity in their daily lives. Their habit of shaking while perfoming ritualistic dances at church services earned them their name. A group of Shakers are depicted here in a circular dance at the Shaker Church in Mt. Lebanon.
