Harriet Tubman painted in 1951 by Robert S. Pious. Harriet Tubman (1820-1913), an African-American abolitionist, humanitarian, and Union spy during the American Civil War. She escaped from slavery and helped to free other slaves via a network of safe houses known as the Underground Railroad.
