Gold jewelry from Persepolis, the ceremonial capital of the Persian Empire ca. 550-330. Lions were an important motif in ancient Persia, closely associated with Persian kingship. The garments and throne decorations of the Persian kings were embroidered with lion motifs, and the crown of king Antiochus I was adorned with a lion. On display at the National Archaeological Museum, Tehran, Iran.
