Fairbanks Flood, Alaska, August 1967. Unprecedented rainfall in July and August of 1967 turned the Chena River into a torrent. Four people were killed, and damage ran into the hundreds of millions of dollars. In the flood's wake, the U.S. Congress passed the Flood Control Act of 1968, which provided funding for construction of the Chena River Lakes Flood Control Project.
