The 5 story pagoda was originally built for the 1915 Panama Pacific Exposition. The Japanese Tea Garden is a popular attraction in Golden Gate Park. The garden was an exhibit at an 1894 World's Fair. A wealthy, Japanese immigrant landscape designer, Baron Makoto Hagiwara, was successful in having the garden become a permanent attraction, after the Fair. He and his family, cared for the garden until 1942, when Japanese Americans were relocated to internment camps. California.
