New Guinea highlanders in the Chimbu area negotiate the sale of pigs for mother of pearl shells, a typical business venture in that stone age area of New Guinea. Shells were brought into the highlands via a well-established inter-tribal trade route. Europeans later brought shells in for barter and payment to tribespeople. Photographed by Australian patrol officer Ian Skinner in 1939.
