Lying on the Adriatic Sea, Split is the second largest city in Croatia, in the Dalmatia region. It is a transportation hub to Adriatic islands and the Apennine peninsula, and a popular tourist destination. Split was started over 2,000 years ago by the Greeks and later developed by the Romans. The Cathedral of St. Duje (shown here) is a complex church, formed from an Imperial Roman mausoleum, with a bell tower, which is the symbol of Split. It was named after the martyr St. Duje, the patron saint of the city.
