Jesuit Father Juan Maria de Salvatierra fournded the Mission of Nuestra Senora de Loreto, Baja California Sur, Mexico. Loreto (or Concho) was the first Spanish settlement on the Baja California Peninsula. The Mission Nuestra Senora de Loreto was founded in the town in 1752. Loreto was capital of the province of Las Californias from its founding until moved to Monterey, CA in 1777. Today, Loreto is a haven for U.S. and Canadian tourists, primarily fishermen.
