Cooling towers and coal pile at the Homer City Power Plant in western Pennsylvania. It is a 2,000 megawatt coal-burning station owned by Edison International and operated by its subsidiary Midwest Generation. Coal-fired power provides over 50% of U.S. electricity. Coal heats water to steam that spins turbines in the power plant. The steam water is cooled in towers before using and discharging it to the environment.
