The ruins of one of the two aqueducts that were built to bring water to the planned city of Caesarea. The water was brought from springs on the southern slopes of Mt. Carmel more than 10 K away (6 miles). Herod the Great built the completely planned city and aqueduct in 37-4 BCE, and dedicated it to Caesar Augustus, the Roman emperor. It is 70 miles northwest of Jerusalem, and 25 miles north, on the coast, from Tel Aviv. Today Caesarea is an open air archeological museum.
