The monastery of Monasterboice was founded by Saint Buite, who died in 521 AD. The high cross shown is known as the Cross of Muiredach, which depicts scenes from the crucifixion on its west side. The east side depicts scenes from the Old Testament. It is in superb condition, made of sandstone, and dates between the ninth and tenth centuries. The cross is 5.5 meters high.
