Coso Petroglyphs, Little Petroglyph Canyon, on the China Lake Naval Air Weapons Station, Mojave Desert, California. This site is considered one of the most extensive petroglyph locations in the Western Hemisphere. It is protected by having limited access controlled by Base Security. However, in this image several instances of modern markings can be seen. The age of the newer marks is unknown. The age of the petroglyphs is still being debated among scholars. Some contend that the Paiute-Shoshone peoples made at least some of the images and that they have been here at least 600 - 800 years. Other scholars contend that a prior society predating the Paiute-Shoshone, possibly as much as 5000 years ago, were the artists.
