Mount Nebo in Jordan is where Moses was shown the Promised Land and reputedly buried. The area has traces of settlement and activity dating back to the Bronze Age. The association with Moses transformed it into a holy place that drew many pilgrims. Excavation in the Siyagha complex (shown here) has revealed churches, a monastery and chapels, which are partly covered for protection.
