Approximately 400 km southwest of Tehran, Hamadan is the trade center for a fertile farm region. It was known to the Greeks as Ecbatana and was the capital of Media in ancient times. Hamadan was passed to the Arabs in the 7th century and was later held by the Seljuk Turks and the Mongols. The tombs of Mordecai and Esther are located here.
