A view of the Park and Shop mall in Washington, D.C., 1930, taken by the photographer Theodor Horydczak (1890-1971). The mall was designed by Arthur Heaton and located on Connecticut Avenue. American shopping malls designed to accomodate cars were built as early as 1916.
