Lake Maracaibo, Venezuela, with swirls of green plant life, captured by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA's Aqua satellite in February 2017. Heavy rain mixes the water layers in the lake, freeing up nutrients for plants to grow. The swirling currents form as water comes in from the Caribbean through the narrow strait.
