Hole-punch clouds over Oklahoma, Arkansas, Louisiana, and Texas, as seen by Terra MODIS on January 29, 2007. Also known as fallstreak holes, these gaps in the cloud cover are formed when airplanes fly through the clouds. Particles from the airplane exhaust cause the super-cooled liquid cloud droplets to freeze, and the resulting ice crystals grow until they drop out of the cloud layer, leaving the holes behind.
