The Potomac River and its many tributaries meander among the ridges of the Allegheny Plateau. Maryland is north of the river; West Virginia is to the south. The five horseshoe-shaped bends near the center are the Paw Paw Bends, famous for the tunnel built by the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal Company to bypass them. Today, the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal and its tunnel are a National Historical Park. The Operational Land Imager (OLI) on Landsat 8 captured this image on September 27, 2016.
