Three kinds of fish from the Devonian Period, including Acanthodes, (1), Climatius (2) and Diplacanthus (3). These fish are all acanthodians, or "spiny sharks", with characteristics of both bony and cartilaginous fish. They are shark-shaped, but not technically sharks. Illustration from Louis Figuier's The World Before the Deluge, 1867 American edition.
