Banded gniess from the shore of the Tasman Sea on the South Island of New Zealand. Gniess is formed at great depth in the earth's crust from other metamorphosed rocks under great temperature and pressure for extended periods of time. Gniess can only be seen in mountain areas where uplift has occurred or where rock has been eroded away, as is likely in this case.
