The Toutle River Valley to the NW of Mount St. Helens was devastated when a powerful mudflow rushed down its entire length during the 1980 eruption and deposited a vast amount of material into the Columbia River, choking shipping lanes. The huge mud flats are still visible but the area is recovering in this July 2009 photo.
