Mauna Kea, a nearly 14,000-foot-high shield volcano on the Big Island of Hawaii, is currently home to 13 major observatories, including the 8-meter Subaru telescope (dome at far left). the 8-meter Gemini North telescope silver dome in middle, and the Canda-France-Hawaii Telescope (white dome at right). An excellent site for making astronomical observations, the summit region is very dry and often cloud-free. The clouds seen here are actually low clouds below the summit over Volcano Hawaii.
