The Pacu, Colossoma macropomum, inhabits the Amazon and Orinoco River Basins. It can attain a length of 108 cm (about 3.5 feet). The species eats fruits, seeds, and invertebrates. This species is an important fishery for communities in and along the Amazon. The meat of this fish is considered a delicacy. Pacu are over-fished but they are also readily cultured. Overexploitation of Amazonian fisheries is a critically important issue to the communities of humans in and along the Amazon River. Many of the fisheries are stressed and over-harvest is commonplace. Photographed at the Belen Market, Iquitos, Peru, 2010.
