In 2007 Southern Georgia and Florida suffered extreme drought. In April and May wildfires started both by nature and by arsonists had joined and spread to become the largest wildfire in the history of both Georgia and Florida. Over 600,000 acres burned. Smoke from the fires traveled as far south as Ft. Lauderdale, and north into Atlanta, Georgia and Chattanooga, Tenessee. The smoke was visible from space. The fires were given several names based on their locale, such as the Florida Bugaboo Fire and the Bugaboo Scrub Fire in Georgia. This photograph was taken one week after the fires came under control. Note the rapid recovery and rebirth in the burned area.
