Goethite, named after the great German author, is hydrous iron oxide and extremely common throughout the world. It forms at or near surface in areas where iron-containing minerals are exposed to weathering and decomposition. Goethite is brown and usually appears as a crust or stain, but occasionally forms distinctive crystal aggregates such as at Lake George, Colorado.
