Franklinite is named after Franklin, New Jersey, one of the most prolific mineral localities on earth. Franklinite is zinc iron oxide, essentially a zinc-rich magnetite and a member of the spinel group of minerals. The New Jersey occurrence is the only location where the mineral occurs in any quantity, and its black, octahedral crystals are quite distinctive.
