Diopside, a calcium magnesium silicate, is one of the most common members of the pyroxene group of minerals. Pyroxenes are ubiquitous and abundant constituents of igneous rocks. Diopside is typically colored green because of iron in the structure. Crystals are often well formed and attractive, and some are even transparent enough to cut into collector gems.
