Chromite is iron chromium oxide, and the only significant ore of chromium, a valuable strategic metal. Chromium deposits worldwide are not common, although chromium appears as an impurity in a large number of minerals. Chromite is always black and occurs both as sharp octahedral crystals and as granular masses, as in this specimen from Nye, Montana.
