Almandine (sometimes spelled almandite) belongs to the garnet family and is a silicate of magnesium and iron. It often occurs in good crystals that are always a dark wine-red color. Almandine crystals typically display a habit (shape) called a dodecahedron. Almandine occurs at many localities in Connecticut and also throughout the world. It is also the garnet most typically used as a gemstone.
